So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us. – 1 Thessalonians 2:8
It was 90 degrees with 85% humidity. I didn’t think I would make it. I was running the 10,000 meter race (25 laps) in a collegiate invitational. I was in fourth with two laps to go. I was so near the end, straining with every muscle while doing my best to relax my body as I picked up the pace. I had to stay focused on the runner ahead with the finish line in my mind’s eye. I passed the third-place runner with 1 lap to go. And then it was just me and the front runner down to the last 200 meters . . . and then, just like that- the race was over. You may find yourself “picking up the pace” as Christmas Day approaches. Last minute gift-buying, final arrangements for travel, Christmas baking and so much to do to get ready for family to arrive. You may wonder if you’ll make it. It seems impossible to relax. But we still have to “run the race.” Remember the small stories of Mary and Joseph, the Shepherds and the Wisemen. Through all the challenges they faced, they still kept their eyes and hearts focused on seeing the Christ Child at the “finish line.” As you prepare for that one, holy night, relax and keep your eyes and hearts focused on seeing Christ. The remaining “to-do” tasks, just like that, will come to an end but Christ will be there at the finish line.
